Think Twice About Charity

I’ve just read an excellent essay by Doug Casey entitled Charity? Humbug! It zeros in on the core of the issue and states bluntly why most charity is destructive – and suggests a few alternatives. Worth the read.

Interesting viewpoint – I like it overall. There are, I think, plenty of people who ‘deserve’ help, in the sense that, through no fault of their own, they end up in a bad situation. I think the average person in plenty of poor countries isn’t evil and doesn’t really deserve to be in such bad shape. That is not to say that you should allow money or aid though to go to their governments. But if you help an individual (say, adopting a child from one of these counties or helping someone to get out of these countries) it would be a reasonable thing to do (so long as it isn’t an incredible burden for you).

I think one good thing to do with money is to leave it to (or establish) an institute or foundation that supports your ideas. Technically it can’t really help you when you are gone, but you may get some satisfaction, while you’re alive, in knowing how your money will be supporting your ideals when you can do so no longer.

I agree. There are millions of people on earth that so deparately need assistance with the basic essentials of life that my heart sincerely wish to assist, but I feel more comfortable giving charity from a personal standpoint given the laws of donating to ther charities.

We are all here to serve a positive purpose and what better way of doing that than through charitable acts to those in need. We are our brothers and sisters keeper no matter what race, creed, religion or color. May God bless us all with compassion, patience, gratitude, humility, unity and the defusing of our egos in order to make this world a better place in which to live.

An excellent article, very sound thinking and a point of view of a person who obviously thinks with his own head. In toltec terms (toltec teachings) such an approach to life is called impeccability – which is the ultimate goal of every persons (warrior) walking the path to freedom.

Doing something on a one-to-one basis is more satisfying and efficient than donating to a typical charity –especially if that charity has costs of 25% for fund raiser’s commissions and 25% for administration and overhead. If you are rich enough, of course, funding a foundation [think Bill Gates] with specific limited objectives is a great idea.

Government aid has proven to be worthless, misguided, and oftenh damaging to the people it is supposed to help. In Africa, foreign aid has IMO merely supported thousands of corrupt politicians & bureaucrats.

welfare system from my understanding is not about helping anyone, it is about reducing producers, creating poverty, increasing voters who vote themselves part of the treasury, a very small part compared to the damage of what they vote for, and about having funds to give corporations who set up shop in other countries which are poor and are not allowed to develope, ever hear of imf predatory lending or economic sanctions against countries that won’t allow the corp named united states to control their economies to the benefit of the same corporation. so they are not allowed to develope so they are dependant on outside corporations to set up shop but won’t unless the gov has in place subsides and infrastructure for them and trained people to employ and no enviromental or safty rules, who then must borrow from the imf (with high interest) in order to pay the us corporations demands who themselves are owned by the same lender. goes out one pocket and goes into the other.

subsides are gov aid. other charties like unicef out of the un doe not get to the poor it is only a front to give subsides to corporations exploitation of the poor peoples resources. charities are usually a front for a corporate agenda. most poor people see very little of what you donate. yes they pull on your heart strings with poor kids on the tv but those kids wouldn’t be that way if not for u.s. gov policy interfering with those peoples’ own development.

you see it all the time the us/britain alliance is always talking about protecting liberty and using force when the reality is they are just bullying other nations into submission. so they can extract their resouces with minimal cost to themselves.

if you want to help the poor do so in your own area, give food to a food bank or money to local chapter like the human society, or shelters for the homeless. you can volunteer for some event that helps poorer people. you can use your imagination. some do habitat for humanity and volunteer their skills to building low income housing. teach someone to read or write if they can’t or maybe teach someone a skill if you have one to help them employ themselves, have you seen the cost of going to a trade school or college? it is outrageous and they make you take classes you don’t need. most are forced to borrow and hence are forced to accept high pay jobs (which are almost impossible to get now a days right out of school) and can’t afford to work at a lower wage job for very long. what a burden.
